Post construction cleaning on Cape Cod is the trade that turns a finished job into a finished house. The tile is set, the paint is right, the trim is tight, and there is still a gray film of drywall dust on every surface, stickers on every window, adhesive on the new floor, and grit in every track. Sentinel Cleaning Company has handled that last step on Cape projects since 2008, from single bathroom remodels to full new builds that have to be spotless before Memorial Day.
We work as a cleaning partner for general contractors, remodelers, developers, and homeowners managing their own renovation. Our crews are insured and background checked and schedule seven days a week from 7am to 9pm, which means we can work around trades during the day or come in after they leave.
Who we work with
General contractors and builders
A reliable cleaning sub who shows up on the date you give, works around the punch list, and leaves the house ready for the walkthrough. We coordinate directly with your site lead.
Remodelers and trade contractors
Kitchen and bath remodels, additions, and whole house renovations on occupied homes, where dust control and a clean handback matter to your next referral.
Homeowners
Owners who managed their own renovation over the winter and need the house clean before family, guests, or renters arrive in the spring.
Developers and commercial build outs
New units before listing photos and closings, plus office, retail, and restaurant build outs that need to be customer ready on opening day.
The three phases of a construction clean
A professional construction clean is not a single visit. Booking only the last one is the most expensive mistake on a job site, because dust never removed at the rough stage keeps landing on finished surfaces for weeks.
| Phase | When it happens | What it covers | Typical crew time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rough clean | After drywall and mechanical rough in, before paint and finish work | Debris and scrap cleared, subfloors vacuumed, fasteners collected, window labels pulled while the adhesive is fresh, cavities and channels vacuumed | Half day to one day |
| Final clean | After all trades are out, before the owner or tenant walks in | Every surface detailed top down, cabinets and drawers inside and out, appliances, fixtures, vents, glass and tracks, residue removal, floors cleaned | One to three days |
| Touch up clean | Three to fourteen days after the final, right before handover | Settled dust removed, punch list areas cleaned again, glass polished again, floors gone over again | Two to five hours |
The touch up is the phase people cut, and it decides what the owner sees on day one. Every punch list visit after the final clean, even a door adjusted or a fixture swapped, puts dust back in the air. For the full breakdown, read our complete guide to post construction cleaning on Cape Cod.
What a final construction clean includes
Top down dust removal
HEPA vacuuming before any damp work, starting at ceilings, light fixtures, and door casings and working down, so drywall dust is lifted instead of smeared into a haze.
Cabinets and built ins
Every cabinet and drawer vacuumed and wiped inside and out, shelves and hardware cleaned, and the top edges of upper cabinets cleared of the dust that collects there.
Kitchens and baths
Appliance interiors and exteriors, protective film removed, tubs, showers, and tile detailed, fixtures polished, and grout haze addressed with the right product for the surface.
Windows and tracks
Manufacturer labels and tape removed, paint and mud specks lifted from glass safely, frames wiped, and window and slider tracks vacuumed and scrubbed of sawdust and gypsum.
Vents and registers
Supply and return covers removed, washed, and reinstalled, exhaust fan covers cleaned, and a reminder to replace HVAC filters after the final clean, not before.
Floors, last
Hard floors vacuumed and damp cleaned with products safe for new finishes, carpet vacuumed, and carpet extraction scheduled if construction dust has settled into new pile.
Dust, paint, adhesive, and grout haze
Removing construction residue without damaging brand new material is what separates a construction cleaning crew from a general cleaner. The wrong blade, the wrong solvent, or too much pressure on a two week old finish creates a defect that costs more than the cleaning did.
- Drywall dust is removed dry first with HEPA filtered vacuums, then damp, then buffed. Wiping it wet first turns gypsum into a paste that dries into a cloudy film.
- Paint specks come off glass and tile with a razor held low and well lubricated, never dry. Brushed and coated metals get plastic scrapers and gentle solvents instead.
- Construction adhesive and caulk are softened with a product matched to the flooring, because what is safe on porcelain can haze vinyl plank or lift a prefinished wood finish.
- Grout haze and thinset need the right product, the right dwell time, and a full rinse, with extra care near natural stone and metal transitions.
- Labels and tape come off far more easily in week one than in week six, especially on south facing glass that has baked in the sun.
Why Cape Cod construction cleaning is different
The calendar is compressed. Interior renovations on the Cape run October through April while seasonal homes are empty, and they all need to be clean before the season opens. New builds run through the summer, competing with every other trade for labor. Booking your final and touch up cleans early is the difference between a firm date and a waiting list.
Distance and traffic are real. A project in Truro or Provincetown is a long drive from Hyannis, longer on a July Friday on Route 6. We schedule Outer Cape finals as full day blocks so the crew is on site, not in traffic.
Salt and damp start right away. New glass and stainless collect salt film almost immediately near the water, which is why glass gets polished again on the touch up. A house closed up with construction moisture inside can smell musty within weeks, and a renovation that opens a wall in an older Cape house can expose mildew worth flagging to the owner rather than wiping over.
Sand gets into new finishes. Every boot brings sand into fresh grout lines and new floor finish. Entry protection and a floor clean at the very end of the job keep that grit from scratching a new floor on move in day.
Scheduling around your handover
Give us your target handover, certificate of occupancy, closing, or move in date, and we plan the phases backward from it. The final clean goes in once every trade is out. The touch up goes in one to three days before the walkthrough. If a trade has to come back after the final, tell us and we will adjust the touch up rather than let the owner walk into fresh dust.
If the project ends with a sale or lease, our move in and move out cleaning service covers the final step. For commercial spaces, the build out clean often leads straight into an ongoing janitorial contract.
Post construction cleaning costs on Cape Cod
Construction cleaning is priced differently from house cleaning because the labor per square foot and the risk to new finishes are both higher. Typical Cape Cod market rates run roughly $0.35 to $0.85 per square foot for a final clean, with simple new construction at the low end and renovations with heavy residue, natural stone, lots of glass, or difficult access at the high end. Rough and touch up visits are usually billed hourly. A whole house renovation on a mid size Cape home commonly lands between $900 and $2,500 across all three phases.
Sentinel quotes each project after a site visit or a set of photos, because the same square footage can be a one day job or a three day job depending on how many trades were in the building and what they left behind. See our pricing page for how our ranges are built.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the phases of post construction cleaning?
Rough clean, final clean, and touch up. The rough clean happens after drywall and mechanical rough in. The final clean happens after all trades are out and covers every detail surface. The touch up runs a few days to two weeks later, right before handover, to remove dust that settled after punch list work.
Is post construction cleaning included in what my contractor does?
Usually not in the detail sense. Most construction contracts specify broom clean condition, meaning debris removed and floors swept. That does not cover cabinet interiors, window labels and tracks, light fixtures, registers, appliance interiors, or grout haze.
Why does construction dust keep coming back after cleaning?
Drywall dust is fine enough to stay airborne for hours and hides in ducts, light cans, cabinet tops, and window channels. Every door slam or fan cycle lifts it again, which is why it reappears for two to four weeks and why the touch up phase exists.
How much does post construction cleaning cost on Cape Cod?
Typical Cape Cod market rates run roughly $0.35 to $0.85 per square foot for a final clean. A whole house renovation on a mid size Cape home commonly lands between $900 and $2,500 across all three phases. Sentinel quotes each project after a site visit or photos.
Do you work with general contractors as a cleaning sub?
Yes. We coordinate with your site lead on access, dates, and punch list timing, work around trades or after hours, and send a completion note after each phase. Our crews are insured and background checked.
Do you clean commercial build outs?
Yes. Office, retail, and restaurant build outs get the same three phase approach, timed to your opening date. Many commercial clients continue with a recurring commercial cleaning contract once they open.
