What a deep clean actually covers

A weekly or biweekly cleaning keeps a house presentable. It touches the surfaces people use: counters, sinks, toilets, floors, mirrors, visible dust. A deep clean is a different scope of work. It assumes nobody has moved the sofa, wiped the top of the refrigerator, or pulled the burner grates in a long time, and it works through the house methodically instead of quickly.

That means detail work at the edges and in the places that are easy to skip. Baseboards get wiped by hand, not swept past. Window tracks get vacuumed and then scrubbed, because on the Cape they collect a paste of sand and salt that a dry pass will not lift. Vent covers, ceiling fan blades, and light fixtures come down or get wiped in place. Cabinet fronts get degreased, especially the run above the stove where cooking oil and dust bond into a sticky layer. Inside the refrigerator, the shelves come out and the gaskets get cleaned, because the rubber seal is where mold starts in a humid coastal kitchen.

The bathrooms take the longest. Grout lines, shower door tracks, the base of the toilet, the underside of the seat hinges, exhaust fan covers, and the caulk seam where the tub meets the tile all get individual attention. In a Cape bathroom without strong ventilation, that caulk seam is usually the first place mildew shows up, and it is the first thing a guest or a buyer notices.

Owners often ask which service they actually need. The short answer: book a deep clean when the house has not had detailed attention in three months or more, book a recurring clean to keep it that way, and book a move out clean when the property is empty and changing hands.

Why deep cleaning Cape Cod houses is different

Three coastal conditions drive almost everything we do differently here.

Salt in the air. Homes within a mile of the water in Falmouth, Chatham, Dennis, or Provincetown collect a fine salt film on windows, storm doors, exterior light fixtures, and interior glass near open windows. Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture out of the air, so it never fully dries into dust you can wipe away. It has to be dissolved and lifted, then dried with a clean pass. Standard glass spray on a dry cloth just moves it around and leaves streaks that show up the moment the afternoon sun hits.

Sand that migrates. Cape sand is fine and it travels. It moves from the beach to the car to the mudroom to the stair treads to the bed. In a deep clean we work sand out of the places it settles and stays: slider tracks, the gap under the baseboard heating covers, sofa cushion seams, the underside of area rugs, and closet floors. Sand left in carpet fiber acts like a grinding compound underfoot and shortens the life of the carpet, which is why deep cleans and carpet extraction often get scheduled together.

Moisture in closed houses. A Cape home that sits empty over the winter, or a summer place that gets shut for two weeks in July, builds up humidity with nothing moving the air. That is how mildew starts on closet walls, in shower caulk, behind furniture pushed against an exterior wall, and inside cabinets under sinks. When to book your deep cleaning

The Cape runs on a season, and the deep cleaning calendar follows it. Two windows matter most.

• May and early June, before the season. Opening a house that has been closed since October means dust on every horizontal surface, musty closets, dead insects on windowsills, and refrigerators that need a full reset. Book early: the two weeks before Memorial Day are the busiest stretch of the spring for every cleaner on the Cape.

• Midwinter, for year round households. Homes with pets, wood or pellet stoves, or a lot of foot traffic benefit from a third deep clean in January or February when the windows have been shut for months.
• Before an event or a listing. Family arriving, a photographer coming, an open house scheduled. A deep clean shows in photographs in a way a quick tidy never does.

Most three bedroom Cape homes take a crew four to seven hours for a full deep clean. Larger properties with several bathrooms, a finished lower level, and a screened porch can take a full day or split into two visits. Time scales with bathroom count more than with square footage, because bathrooms carry the most detail work.

On cost, we will be straight with you: Sentinel does not publish a flat rate table, because the same square footage can be a four hour job or a nine hour job depending on how long the house has been closed, whether there are pets, and how much detail is needed in the kitchen and baths.
