Window cleaning Cape Cod homes need is not the same job as washing windows in a dry inland town. What makes salt different from ordinary dirt is that it is hygroscopic: it attracts and holds water from the air. Salt film on glass never fully dries. It sits there as a slightly damp, slightly sticky layer. Spray a household glass cleaner on it and wipe with a paper towel and you dissolve part of it, smear the rest across the pane, and leave a residue that becomes visible the moment the sun hits it at an angle. The method that works is the professional one. Wet the glass with a solution that dissolves salt, agitate with a scrubber so the film releases rather than just being pushed around, squeegee off in overlapping passes with the blade wiped between strokes, and detail the edges with a clean cloth. It takes longer than a spray bottle. It also actually removes the salt instead of relocating it.
Hard water spotting and etching
The second Cape specific problem is mineral deposits. Two sources dominate: lawn sprinklers that overspray onto glass, and well water used to rinse windows or run outdoor showers near the house. Both leave calcium and magnesium behind when the water evaporates.
Fresh mineral spots sit on top of the glass and come off with an appropriate acidic treatment applied carefully and rinsed. Old spots are a different matter. Over months and years of sun exposure, minerals can bond into the glass surface and etch it. Etched glass is physically altered, and no cleaner will restore it. Sometimes a mechanical polish helps, sometimes the pane needs replacement.

What is included in a window cleaning visit
Exterior glass
Full wash with a salt dissolving solution, scrubbed and squeegeed rather than wiped, with edges detailed by hand. Frames and exterior sills wiped down so runoff does not immediately re dirty the glass you just cleaned.
Interior glass
Interior panes cleaned and detailed, interior sills wiped, and window locks and hardware dusted. Interior glass on the seaward side often carries a salt film too, from windows left open on breezy summer days.
Screens washed and reinstalled
Screens removed, washed to clear pollen, salt, and insect debris, dried, and reinstalled. Cleaning glass and leaving dirty screens in place is wasted money, because the first onshore breeze puts the dirt straight back on the pane.
Tracks and sills
Window and slider tracks vacuumed then scrubbed. On the Cape these fill with a paste of sand and salt that jams rollers and rots weatherstripping, and it is the detail most often skipped by a quick service.
Storm windows and combination units
Storm panels cleaned, including between the panes where haze and insects accumulate. Older Cape houses with combination storm and screen units get the full treatment rather than a pass over the outer surface only.
